Dj Corey Grand: The Young Jedi
I would like to call myself a bit of an expert when it comes to Varsity Squad DJs. When K and Step are both spinning at a party, I can tell who is spinning by the mix, without seeing who is in the booth. I play games with my friends, guessing the song they will mix in next, and nine times out of ten, I’m right. I have written blog after blog about why they are my favorite mixologists and every volume of their mixtapes stays on heavy rotation in my car. So when they announced the newest addition to the Varsity Squad family, DJ Corey Grand, I knew he had to be good to get their stamp of approval, but I was skeptical if I could now divide my devotion between 3. I’ve been busy the past few months honing my anti social skills, rarely attending any events so I haven’t had many chances to hear Corey spin. I promised him a blog, but I wanted to see him rock a party and not just stand in the shadows of K and Step. I was waiting for a chance to hear him do his thing, to make me sweat my hair out. And Saturday night I got my chance. I decide to discard my hermit shell and make an appearance at the Jumpoff. The event was billed as a happening, not an event, so I had to go to see what’s happening. I get there early and it was a club full of women, doing their usual, sitting around talking to their girls. I already have it set in my mind that I won’t stay long if the crowd doesn’t wake up. My tolerance for party goers who refuse to party has grown thin. I find a spot to post up for the night, right next to the booth and decide that if nothing else, it will be a good night to finally listen to the youngin, who has been anxiously awaiting his blog. The set up was different, three DJ’s instead of the normal two. Step, Jack D Rippa and young Corey. Since Step had another event he went first and was already gone by the time I got there. Jack D Rippa was on when I walked in and I admit, he was making my head nod. I lean over and tell Corey that since he was in the headliner slot, he better kill it…no pressure. I sit there doing my normal, nodding my head, soaking in the beats, deciphering lyrics, patiently waiting to hear the heir to the throne. I was pleasantly surprised when my Soft Wednesday partner in crime Ldot appeared as if out of nowhere and we settle in to do our regular: sipping on drinks, nodding our head to bangers, in our own little world. Soft Wednesday: remix. Finally, I see Corey setting up and I admit I was getting excited. Couldn’t wait for the assault on my ears. He starts full steam, no warm up needed. I’m nodding and smiling, impressed by what I hear. The crowd thickens as if right on que and suddenly Anatomy is rockin!!! I’m not sure if it was the music or the Mi Amors, but the music was making me high, drawing me out of my shell like a pied piper. It was no longer me sitting in the club, intently listening to the new kid on the block. I found myself standing on the platform rocking out with Ldot like we were at…dare I say…Potluck. He’s playing all the favorites he didn’t know were my favorites, mixing new hits with tried and true club bangers. I’m trying to play cool and do my standard Mi Amor two step, but Im losing….BIG time. Finally I stop fighting the flow and let the music take over. Arrogant calls me out on the mic, tripping that I am actually dancing. I look at Ldot and say,” Folks act like I don’t dance”. He shrugged his shoulders and said, “You don’t.” Score one for the youngin. The party is rocking and my hair is hopelessly sweated out, when I see the youngin hop on the platform. I lean in to tell him good job, but I’m confused because I swear it sounds like he’s still spinning. I look over at the booth and see Step has come back to close out the night. I laugh because I didn’t even notice the transition. So much for my expertise… Well done young jedi…well done.
